An introduction to Out For Sport, who we are and what we do.

Background
We started after the Amsterdam Gay Games in 1998. Almost 500 athletes from this country travelled to Amsterdam but as individuals or as indivdual clubs. To try and build up cooperation between the various groups, a number of us came together using the title Out For Sport in August 1999 to organise the UK's first ever gay multi-sports meet. The weekend was a great success with five hundred athletes from 10 countries taking part in swimming, squash, volleyball, football, badminton and running.

As always, we will continue to provide a focal point for teams and individuals to communicate with each other.

Inclusiveness
Out for Sport is inclusive for all the clubs and groups that organise and run competitive sports, participating sports and the broad mix of recreational physical activities for the LGBT community.

What are our aims?
We are a grassroots organisation set up by members of Lesbian and Gay sports teams in London with three clear aims:

Information - allow visitors/newcomers to find information on all the clubs

Communication - promote communication between clubs, other groups, the wider community and the press

Cooperation - facilitate joint ventures.

How will we do it?

Information - To begin with we have set up a very comprehensive website with details of sports clubs and links to club websites. The website can be used to pick up ideas from what others are doing and is a good starting point for anyone interested in locating the right club. If a sport is not listed then it is still a good idea to email us at  info @ outforsport.org   as we may have some information that is not up on the site yet.

Communication - Mainly through email to circulate information that clubs may find helpful. We will do our best to help encourage communication between the press and sports groups. If you would like to be included in mailings please email us at   info @ outforsport.org   .

Cooperation - from time to time, clubs will want to come together to set up joint ventures, e.g. sports meets or social events. Out For Sport will provide a forum for ideas to be discussed, help in setting up teams, allow individuals to share experience and can help to structure individual projects. Sydney 2002 is a perfect example of something we can do much better when we work together than we could have done as individual clubs.
