I am pleased to inform you of the opening of a new club in Madrid, G-Madrid Sports. Our aim is to
promote sports in general, but we are a club with a difference: our membership is predominantly gay.
Yet, why should a sports club have mostly gay members? It is true that Spanish society has taken a
great step forward with the recognition of gays rights. Integration of gays has also increased in many
spheres such as; politics, economy, art, business, etc. Sports contribute and emphasize human values
like dignity, honesty, self-improvement, competitiveness and also enrich the feeling of comradeship.
Unfortunately, as members of sports teams, gays have often seen these values underestimated due to
the fear and ignorance of others or the exclusion of gays.
G-Madrid Sports desires to encourage sportsmen, regardless their sexual orientation, to practice
sports within an environment of equality and respect. We would like any sexual orientation be neither
a handicap nor a distinguishing characteristic for the rest of the members. Furthermore, G-Madrid
Sports takes part in many traditional competitions inside and outside of Madrid and thus contributes to
open gay presence. As an example, G-Madrid Sports football team has consecutively won two local
competitions as well as traditional races (half marathon, race for business, race for AIDS, etc.).
Not only does G-Madrid Sports participate in competitions, we are at present organizing a non-profit
popular multi-sport tournament during the "Gay Pride" celebrations in Madrid, the "Pride Games"- The
games will be held in late June in Alcobendas, a town on the outskirts of Madrid and whose Town
Council has made a great contribution to this tournament. During these games, everybody will have an
opportunity to participate in football, volleyball, basketball, acuatlon, (2Km+400m+1Km), bicycle
route, and in one of our most important event, the "Pride Race" (Carrera del Orgullo), a popular 10km
competition through the streets of Alcobendas. The "Pride Race" will be the first of its kind ever
organized during the gay pride celebrations in Spain, though we are determined to make it as a
traditional event among Madrid summer races.
